What is NLP?

What is NLP? Many people have heard of NLP and the general understanding of NLP is somewhat inconsistent. The reason for this is because NLP has been widely applied in many areas, causing it to be associated with the area of its known application by the users. Today, please allow me to share with you what is NLP in its true form.

First of all, NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. Each of these 3 words already covers a wide range of aspects. Neuro refers to our nervous system, with particular interests in how our experiences are processed via our 5 senses. Linguistic refers to the verbal and non-verbal communication systems through which our neural representations are coded, ordered and given meaning, which include pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes, smells and words. Programming denotes the ability to discover and utilize the programs we run in our neurological systems to achieve our desired outcomes.

Sounds technical right? It is. So, let me take a common daily event as an example. Let's say a cockroach appears in front of you. The nervous system that is related to your vision, like your eyes, receive the information of the cockroach in front of you and the information is processed into an image that matches an image you have seen before, retrieved from your memory, which allows your mind to form a picture of the cockroach in your mind, letting you know you saw a cockroach. Subsequently, depending on the past experiences with cockroaches, some may react in fear whilst some may react with the urge to get rid of the cockroach.

We may already know the mechanics of how we manage to 'see' the cockroach but many may not know that we can actually 'program' how we react to the cockroach. In other words, one can decide to get rid of the emotion of fear towards the cockroach, which arises unconsciously on its own, and 'reprogram' or 'rewire' our mind to be rid of the fear intentionally. Therefore, NLP lets us understand how our nervous system operates and offers us the techniques to manage our behaviors purposefully. To put it in plain language, NLP is about how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve our specific and desired outcomes.

Therefore, it is of no surprise how wide the applications of NLP can be. Personally, one can start to be mindful of one's own existing being and begin to gain better control of one's own mind, emotions and behaviors to achieve specific goals in life. For example, one can choose to get rid of the fear towards cockroach, as described above, or one may also learn to boost confidence for public speaking, cultivate a more positive mindset, manage certain negative emotions, get rid of certain habits or achieve any other positive changes. .

Other than personal transformation, NLP techniques are also designed to help people of all ages. NLP prides itself with sets of practical coaching tools, which allow coaches to help people in many areas including academic performance, business management, career enhancement, development of mental health, emotional management, family & relationships, goal realizations, habit cultivation, leadership, parenting, teaching and many more. I remember Dr Stephen Covey once said that what we get is influenced by what we do and what we do is influenced by how our mind see things. NLP coaching is so powerful and wide-ranging because its practical tools can help you to achieve your desired outcome by changing both your behaviors and your minds.

Again, in summary, NLP is about how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve your specific and desired outcomes.
