Online communication is probably going to stay for a while and we discussed in previous episodes about Focus and Interactions. Today, we shall discuss about human Connections. People feel that is it more challenging to connect with people online hence render the communication less effective, especially when certain types of influencing is involved e.g. selling or negotiating.
However, this may not necessary be the case. NLP teaches us at least 6 categories of methodologies to connect with people, through establishing rapport. The categories include body language, facial expressions, breathing, voice, contents and predicates for different modalities.
First of all, we need to understand that we do not need to use all approaches to connect with people. We just need to use one effectively. Furthermore, I would suggest that all 6 categories of methodologies above are very much available through online communication.
It is also worth noting that there are people who also do not know how to connect face-to-face anyway, right? So, the real issue is in the mindset and the technical know-how. If we start believing that we can communicate effectively offline and online, that's a great starting point. Then, what's left is just to learn the right methods, and the methods still involves all the 6 categories above, nothing new. In addition, new methods to establish rapport, specifically developed for online communication are now available as well.
There you go. Focus, Interactions and Connections (FIC) can be very much maintained or even enhanced in online communication. In fact, there are many other opportunities that are available for online communication that I have not even started discussing here. My take is online or offline communication could be a personal choice, which is not very different from whether you prefer red or green.
However, when communication is important enough and offline communication is restricted, let's put our positive mind to learn and conduct good quality online communication. Avoid unconsciously using online communication as the excuse to put off important conversations. We just need to change our mindset, learn and practise to enhance our communication, be it online or offline.
