How bad is Online Communication? Episode 3

Continuing from our discussion about online communication. We saw that online communication is not going away any time soon in Episode 1. We also discussed that maintaining focus is not any different be it online or offline in Episode 2. In fact, I saw an article just after Episode 2 was published where Zoom has launched a 'Focus' mode. How coincidental is that? This episode we shall look into 'I' for interactions.

 

Many believe that interactions are constrained through online communication. For this we first need to understand briefly that interactions in communication involve our multiple senses, including Visual (what we see), Auditory (what we hear), and Kinesthetic (what we feel internally and externally). This is evident in NLP Model of Communication, known in short as VAK modalities.

 

With this understanding, we can then understand that while the interaction of through forms of sensory modalities may be affected, some other forms may be enhanced through online communication. For people who has K as their preferred modality, online communication takes away the opportunity to touch and feel close (external K) to the surroundings and the people they communicate with. No doubt that will reduce the potential of their engagement.

 

On the other hand, there are many technological options for online communication today, where we can experience a more dynamic and enhanced Visual and Auditory inputs, due to the available multimedia, multifaceted, interactive communication platforms and games. The enhanced Visual and Auditory experience combined are able to indirectly enhance our internal feelings (internal K).

 

As we speak, more and more technological enhancements are being developed. There are platforms that allow participants to see themselves visually in a virtual room; there are games that can be brought in as ice-breakers or even used to share substantial contents, which expanded the learning and demonstration possibilities, compared to limited hands-on tool alone.
