In Episode 1, we see that the pandemic has caused many types of daily communications to move online. However, many people seem to be rather dissatisfied with online communication and they are hopeful for the return of face-to-face communication at the end of the pandemic. As I mentioned I don’t think we can wait that long and online communication may very well be here to stay anyway. As promised, we are going to look into online communication in terms of three areas, with the acronym FIC, starting F for Focus in this episode.
One of the complaints about online communication is related to distractions. It is argued that people are distracted by the happenings in their surroundings, at home or anywhere else, when they are having an online communication scenario, regardless whether it is a meeting or a training. Sure, that's probably true.
On the other hand, when we are in a face-to-face meeting or in a face-to-face training, won't we get distracted? Think of it just 2 years ago. Haven't we seen a meeting room or a training room with participants having laptops in front of them? Many were probably going through their emails or even surfing the net. How about smart phones? Have you seen people falling asleep?
There are factors that distract us, be it online or offline, anyway. Hence, the issue of distraction is perhaps not so much about online or offline. Perhaps the content and the style of delivery of the communication are the more important factors? In fact, one can argue to the contrary in terms of focus. When we are present in an external environment for a meeting or a training in person, we might have been distracted by the action of other attendees in the room or some people walking in and out to take calls.
When we set up an online call, we have the liberty to choose a space where there is minimal distraction; we are less likely to be distracted by the actions of other attendees, unless we intentionally pin and enlarge every attendee's image one by one!
I would say that Online or Offline, one can be focused or one can be distracted. So, I don't think having online as the communication method is the issue. We shall look into the other two aspects in subsequent episodes. Until then, stay FOCUS…
