How bad is Online Communication? Episode 1

The pandemic situation, coupled with government policies on movement control, has forced people to move online to communicate for over a year now. How are you feeling about online communication?

 

Daily communication at work, children's education, tertiary education, conferences, trainings, non-governmental organisations' meetings, charity organisations' meetings and even social gatherings are now held online. Have you had coffee sessions in front of the your screen with a friend?

 

All these would have sounded weird 2 years ago and many would have probably said, 'Never', to such suggestions.  So, again, how are you feeling about all these? It is common to hear people expressed, 'Online communication is just not as effective," "Can't wait to return to face-to-face training," "Let's wait until we return to face-to-face meeting." The mentality seems to be hoping that everything will return to the previous normal, where face-to-face communication is should be the case. I've got two questions: "When is that" and "Really?"

 

If we were to keep postponing whatever is it we hope to achieve until face-to-face communication becomes possible, we are more or less stuck, organisations would have come to a stand-still and so will the economy. Beyond the pandemic, will online communication be struck out and everything return to the previous normal? I forecast that that's rather unlikely. So, since online communication is going to be around anyway, why don't we have a closer look at how bad it really is? I will discuss about this in terms of three areas, with the acronym FIC, in a series of few short article. Stay tuned…
